What Is The Procedure?

Peformed as a day procedure, a surgical abortion is a safe and effective way to terminate a pregnancy up to 14 weeks. Whether you choose to have a surgical abortion in our state-of-the-art theatre suite, or a medical abortion, we are here to help. We can also assist if you have an incomplete miscarriage or retained products of conception.

How Long Does It Take?

While you will be present at the day hospital for ~4 hours, the procedure is completed in about 10 minutes and no followup appointment is required. Recovery after anaesthesia is approximately 30 minutes and you should feel back to normal before you head home. While it might seem a long time despite the procedure being short, this is standard practice for day hospitals. There is a lot going on behind the scenes, from before you arrive until after you leave, to ensure your entire journey is safe and efficient. We don't want to waste your time either, and we'll have you home as soon as is safely possible. For abortions above 12 weeks gestation, you will require an additional ~2 hours for medication to soften the cervix.

Does It Hurt?

You will be pain-free & asleep during the procedure where the Anaesthetist will give you strong pain relief. When you wake up in recovery you may have some pain similar to your period pain. The team will ensure there are adequate medications for you in recovery should you have signficant pain, discomfort or nausea.

What If I've Had A Caesarian?

In rare cases the placenta may cover or infiltrate the scar site from a previous caesarian section. If this is the case, there is an increased bleeding risk when you have an abortion (surgical or medical). This is why we ask for a formal ultrasound scan with the placenta site clearly documented in the report.

What Should I Bring?

You do not need a referral letter, but you do need photo identification and your medicare card if you have one. If you DO have a referral, blood results or ultrasound scan and/or report, please bring these. This extra information will make your journey smoother. Please also bring extra underwear and sanitary pads (not tampons).

How Much Does It Cost

The entire process is covered under a single fee ($710*), including all equipment, medications, staff, the Surgeon & Anaesthetist and more. * Prices will vary if your gestation is later or if you do not have a Medicare card. If you have private health insurance, let our team know so we can check your cover & eligibility.
